The third new addition to Team Snapcardster is Martin Müller, the youngest on this team of Denmark's best players. At just 17 years of age, he made a name for himself on the international stage by winning the 2014 World Magic Cup with team Denmark alongside Snapcardster x MTGMintcard teammembers Simon Nielsen and Thomas Enevoldsen. Ever since, he's been someone to be reckoned with on the pro circuit, placing in the Top 8 of five Grand Prix events over the next few years and even making it to the Top 8 of the Pro Tour twice. In addition to that, he managed another Top 8 finish with team Denmark at the 2015 World Magic Cup in the year after his victory, missing the playoffs by just one spot.
Martin was ready to get into an interview with Andreas "ecobaronen" Petersen and tackle topics like his journey to the top, his role on a Pro Tour testing team and his goals for the new season.
Hello Martin and welcome to the hot chair! First of all, tell our readers about the journey from local FNM player to mainstay on the Pro Tour. What is your secret formula?
I started playing Magic from the age of 12. I grasped Magic pretty quickly so just after two years I was pretty focused on qualifying for a Pro Tour. I began playing a lot more and would not accept not knowing exactly why I would make a given play. That really paid off: I won a PTQ at the age of 15 and have been qualified for every Pro Tour since.
At 20 years old you're by far the youngest guy on a team filled with people in their 30s. Are age and experience important in Magic, and how do you see this project working out socially?
I am used to being the “kid” by now. I definitely think it helps having played Magic longer but when you are 14 to 16 you have a lot more free time to make up for some years. I know everyone on the team already and I would call all five of them friends, so it's not gonna be a problem.
Unfortunately, you fell short of Gold status for this season and for the first time in your professional career, you are relegated to your Silver invite and of course Regional Pro Tour Qualifiers and the Grand Prix grind. How do you plan on getting back to your winning ways and how do you deal with the new situation mentally?
I’ll just make Gold at any of the upcoming events, easily! Or rather - hopefully.
You have previously prepared for Pro Tours with some of the greatest minds of the game. What was your role on those teams and which part of your game do you feel is the strongest?
I have always been a deck builder, deck finder and a deck tuner. I feel strongest in Constructed and less so in Limited. Though the gap between those two is a lot smaller than when I first started playing on the Pro Tour.
Looking ahead to the next season, we managed to get together the top six players from Denmark. What are your goals? Both personal and as a team.
I’m, as always, going to try to make Platinum, win a Pro Tour, or qualify for Worlds. For the Team Series, I really hope we can put the Danish flag into the playoffs at Worlds at the end of the year.
