Rhystic Study: Zurgo Helmsmasher

Zurgo Helmsmasher

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 34th column of "Rhystic Study"!

In Commander, players are usually focused on trying to pull off flashy combos and dominate the board with big plays, preferably with synergistic cards which interact well with their Commander. This is largely due to the fact that you're playing a multiplayer game, and it is not that easy to win via the path of Commander damage.

However, today, we're going to try and achieve that with Zurgo Helmsmasher. Since we only need 21 Commander damage to win, Zurgo Helmsmasher is kind of perfect since you only need three hits to win. The fact that it is indestructible during your turn also offers a lot of possibilities to construct this deck.

Let's begin smashing!

Building Blocks #1: Cards That Help You Attack

Zurgo Helmsmasher wants to attack. It has to hit an opponent three times for you to secure the win. Thankfully, there are many options that can help you to get there faster!

Assault Suit Fireshrieker Lightning Greaves Champion's Helm Loxodon Warhammer Whispersilk Cloak

All these equipment serve a role in either protecting Zurgo, or gives it an additional punch! For example, Fireshrieker takes 14 damage when it connects and Loxodon Warhammer simply tramples over smaller creatures.

Assault Suit hastens everyone's death but yours, while Lightning Greaves and Champion's Helm keeps Zurgo hanging around longer!

Building Blocks #2: Paving the Way

Since Zurgo Helmsmasher is indestructible during your turn, this opens up the possibility of playing a bunch of board sweepers!

Austere Command Blasphemous Act Damnation Day of Judgment Jokulhaups Sublime Exhalation Chandra's Ignition Wrath of God Decree of Pain

So yea, these cards allow you to kill everyone else's creatures, while keeping yours alive! This also means that you should build your deck to include as few creatures as possible, unless they play a very important role. You don't want to be killing your own creatures because that is just "anti-synergy"!

Building Blocks #3: Equipment-Themed Cards

Since there are a lot of equipment in the deck, why not run some equipment themed cards?

Godo, Bandit Warlord Stoneforge Mystic Stonehewer Giant Relic Seeker Sram, Senior Edificer Puresteel Paladin Steelshaper's Gift Open the Armory Sigarda's Aid

Thankfully, these are mostly format superstars and it shouldn't be difficult to acquire. In fact, if you're as huge a Commander fan like me, you'll likely have most of these staples already. Of note, Godo, Warlord Bandit is especially fun because its rare that you'll find a red deck that has an equipment theme. Thankfully, since Zurgo Helmsmasher is also white, you'll get to pair these two colors together.

Oh yea, it's pretty fun to search up Worldslayer too!

Building Blocks #4: Mardu Removal

There are some Mardu cards that rarely see play because of the intense color requirement but this is a perfect home for it. In addition, white, red and black are the king of removal spells and combining them together means you'll have the best removal suite any player could ask for!

Crackling Doom Mardu Charm Terminate Dreadbore Utter End Vindicate Anguished Unmaking Wear // Tear Return to Dust

The Final Product!
