Rhystic Study: Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 19th column of "Rhystic Study"!

This week, Kaladesh releases and we have a few more Legendary creatures in the mix! The most powerful and most fun one has to be Rashmi, Eternities Crafter! Let's take a look at her abilities before we behind finding cards to assemble the deck!

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter

What do we have here? For four mana, Rashmi, Eternities Crafter has a small-sized body but her real power comes in her one and only ability! Whenever you cast a spell each turn, and not only your own turn, you'll get her trigger. When that happens, you flip over the top card of your deck and if it costs less, you get to cast it for FREE! And if it's a card that costs more, or if it's a land, you put it into your hand.

Either way, you're gaining one free card per turn, making Rashmi, Eternities Crafter extremely powerful if built correctly!

Since Rashmi, Eternities Crafter's ability triggers whenever you cast the first spell each turn, the logical way to abuse it is to ensure that you have a bunch of instant-speed card to cast on each of your opponents' turns. This means that you'll want a lot of actual instants, or creatures with flash, such that you can always be doing something when its not your turn.

Let's begin with that in mind!

Building Blocks #1: Instants

What type of instants do we want in this deck? We certainly do not want combat tricks, that's for sure. The best choice would be countermagic!

Mystic Confluence Cryptic Command

Voidslime Counterspell Plasm Capture

Mana Drain Desertion

With so many quality counterspells to choose from, these 10 are the best of the very best. Plasm Capture and Mana Drain will gain you a lot of mana for your next turn, which also means that you have a lot more mana to use during your opponent's turns. Cryptic Command and Mystic Confluence are there just because you can always cast them even when your opponent isn't casting a spell.

All these countermagic serve to protect Rashmi, Eternities Crafter and to stop crucial spells from resolving.

Commandeer Misdirection Force of Will

In particular, I would like to draw your attention to those three that actually cost no mana, and that is Commandeer, Misdirection and Force of Will. You can pitch cards to cast them but they will still count as a 5-mana card, which means that if the top card of your library is 4 mana or less you'll get to cast that card for free. This is basically cheating on a lot of mana, which makes it really, really broken. If you want to take it one step further, you can even play with Thwart, Foil or Disrupting Shoal!

Building Blocks #2: Creatures with Flash

Since the theme is to keep our mana open all the time, we should be maximising ways to cast our creatures at instant speed. Here are some of my picks of the creatures with flash, and coincidentally, many of them are counterspells too!

Mystic Snake Draining Whelk Venser, Shaper Savant

Elder Deep-Fiend Snapcaster Mage Stunt Double

Remember, the way to play this deck is to cast spells on each and every turn, so maximizing your instant speed cards is crucial!

Building Blocks #3: "Flash" Enablers

There aren't many creatures without flash but we don't wanna leave any man behind! We certainly hope that the rest of the creatures such as Eternal Witness and Solemn Simulacrum can be flashed in too! What are some ways to enable that?

Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir Yeva, Nature's Herald

Leyline of Anticipation Winding Canyons Alchemist's Refuge

Originally, I had Vedalken Orrery in the 99 but I felt that spending 4 mana on it was a waste of time when I can just replace most of my creatures into instant-speed creatures. Leyline of Anticipation, however, has the off-chance of being cast for free and that's why I only went with that one.

 Building Blocks #4: Library Manipulation

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter works well as long as you're casting cards for free from the top of your deck. And even if you're not, you're drawing a free card anyway. But how can we further tilt the scales to our advantage?

Brainstorm

By manipulating the top of our deck or finding ways to look at the top card of our deck, we will be able to control our Rashmi triggers more effectively! Needless to say, Brainstorm is the perfect card for this purpose, but here are some of the best ways to do so!

Sylvan Library Mirri's Guile Sensei's Divining Top

Soothsaying Courser of Kruphix Oracle of Mul Daya

Jace, the Mind Sculptor Scroll Rack Crystal Ball

As you can see, all of these cards will assist you in not only seeing the top card of your library and in some cases even help you put the card you want on top of your deck.

Building Blocks #5: "Cheating" on Mana

Just like what I mentioned earlier about Force of Will, Misdirection and Commandeer, a great way to "cheat" on mana is to cast spells without actually paying the full cost of those cards?

Aside from these 3 cards, what other mechanics can we utilize? Affinity would be nice but we don't have that many artifacts. Ooh, the "free" spells from Urza's Block are pretty good!

Peregrine Drake Frantic Search

Palinchron Treachery Rewind

You can also build upon the idea of alternate mana costs such as Gush or you can also explore Convoke such as in the case of Chord of Calling. Lastly, you can also meddle around with the Delve cards!

Gush Chord of Calling

Dig Through Time Treasure Cruise Logic Knot

What other "mana reduction" mechanics can you find?

So basically all of these cards will cost near to no mana, and will help you cast the top card of your deck most of the time since their mana costs are so large! Everything is about to fall into place!

Building Blocks #6: Final Touches

Aside from the usual Commander mana rocks and green ramp spells, we also want some tutoring, win conditions and support.

Personal Tutor Mystical Tutor Worldly Tutor

Seedborn Muse Lurking Predators Mind's Dilation

If only myself were legal. As you know, Prophet of Kruphix would be perfect in this deck. But since, I'm banned, we'll settle for my sister, the Seedborn Muse. Personal Tutor, Mystical Tutor and Worldly Tutor also put the card you want on the top of your deck, perfect for Rashmi, Eternities Crafter! Lastly, since we have so much library top manipulation, Lurking Predators and Mind's Dilation seemed like perfect fits!

The Final Product!

Putting all of that together and adding in nice lands and cool mana rocks, we have this following product.

Rashmi, Eternities Crafter is a great deck for Spikes and Johnnies alike because there are so many powerful cards, nasty countermagic, card drawing and big effects. I believe it will be a very competitive deck in multiplayer regardless of how many players are at the table. The fact that Rashmi's ability scales according to the number of players is great news!

Grim Monolith Gitaxian Probe Seal of the Guildpact

If you want to make the deck even more consistent and competitive, you can even throw in more power cards such as Grim Monolith, more cheap cantrips such as Preordain and Gitaxian Probe. You can even run mana reduction cards such as Sapphire Medallion, Emerald Medallion and Seal of the Guildpact and attempt the Affinity route.

If you're a fan of Blue-Green, you can also check out Venturing with Vorel, one of my previous articles. What Simic Commander are you currently running and would you consider the switch to Rashmi, Eternities Crafter?

Regards,

Prophet of Kruphix
