Rhystic Study: Kambal, Consul of Allocation

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 21st column of "Rhystic Study"!

Kambal, Consul of Allocation is not really allocating life fairly, is he? In fact, he is reallocating all the life from your opponents, to you! In multiplayer games, the ability is not only keeping you alive, but also serves as a win condition. As such, we're looking to prolong the game as long as we can in order for the triggers to stack up and hopefully trap your opponents into a corner!

Sounds fun already? Let's begin!

Kambal, Consul of Allocation

Building Blocks #1: Stalling the Game

Ideally we want cards like Moat but that seems too expensive at the moment. How about some of these options to annoy your opponents and keep you safe?

Ghostly Prison Sphere of Safety

Crawlspace Norn's Annex No Mercy

You can also stack upon these effects with the help of some creatures such as Windborn Muse and Silent Arbiter but I generally don't like to play creatures (unless it is High Priest of Penance) because they are killed more easily than artifacts and enchantments are.

The goal is to stop your opponents from attacking you, while you slowly drain away at their precious life points!

Building Blocks #2: More Ways to Drain Life!

Since Kambal, Consul of Allocation is always draining away at your opponent's life, we can always accelerate the process by playing even more cards of this theme!

The extort cards from Gatecrash are a great starting point and I'd like to begin with these few for utility.

Blind Obedience Treasury Thrull Crypt Ghast

There are many other spells that assist you in your goal and White-Black is very good at doing that. Cards like Death Grasp are pretty cool, but we would rather have cards that do something to all your opponents rather than just one of them. For this reason, I've selected these cards for massive life drain!

 Gray Merchant of Asphodel Exsanguinate

Debt to the Deathless Athreos, God of Passage Orzhov Guildmage

Bloodchief Ascension Palace Siege

Building Blocks #3: Abusing Life Gain

Kambal, Consul of Allocation is already a built-in lifegain machine, so what can we do with those bunch of life we gain? Aside from cushioning your life total and staying alive, we can use our life as a resource and win condition!

Felidar Sovereign Aetherflux Reservoir

Serra Ascendant Divinity of Pride Sanguine Bond

Defiant Bloodlord Well of Lost Dreams

If you want to have more fun gaining even more life, you can also consider these cards!

Alhammarret's Archive Boon Reflection Rhox Faithmender

Building Blocks #4: Board Control

Black and White has no lack of board sweepers and the biggest card we gain from Kaladesh is...

Fumigate

There are so many options at your disposal and you can mix and match your board removal spells as you wish. If you want mana efficiency, you can go for four mana sweepers such as Wrath of God and Damnation. If you want a little utility, try out Life's Finale, Austere Command, Deadly Tempest. If you want to be selfish, you can just play Plague Wind and In Garruk's Wake! It's all up to you!

Wrath of God Deadly Tempest Decree of Pain

Building Blocks #5: Tutors & Mana

No deck is complete without a few tutors and some good mana rocks. As a Commander enthusiastic, I absolutely love my tutors and my mana rocks. Here are some of the best cards that I'm including in this deck.

Demonic Tutor Enlightened Tutor Rune-Scarred Demon Orzhov Signet Thought Vessel Coalition Relic

The Final Product!

This deck is about as Orzhov as it can be and has ton of exciting Orzhov cards for the player who loves to gain life and drain life.

Kambal, Consul of Allocation is not very competitive but the benefit of building this deck is that there are a lot of interchangeable parts with other White-Black Commanders such as Ayli, Eternal PilgrimAthreos, God of Passage and Karlov of the Ghost Council, both of which are also in your maindeck!

At any time, if you want a slightly different experience, you can simply swap your Commander around and have another game! What a great idea, aye?

Prophet of Kruphix
