Rhystic Study: Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer

Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 31st column of "Rhystic Study"! Aether Revolt spoiler season is in full swing and tons of exciting cards are being released daily. In the spirit of all the artifact goodness in the air, let's pay some tribute to Metalcraft!

Naturally, Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer wants you to play with a ton of them and it being a Boros-colored Commander simply means that it is more aggressive in nature than usual. How can we go about assembling this deck and making the best of its ability?

Building Blocks #1: Artifact Creatures

Not only do artifact creatures help you out with Metalcraft, you can also attack with them after they receive a +3/+0 boost. We're going to start off with an assortment of artifact creatures which each serve their own function.

Gold Myr Iron Myr Etched Champion Palladium Myr Steel Hellkite Wurmcoil Engine Solemn Simulacrum Metalwork Colossus Hangarback Walker Epochrasite Myr Battlesphere Ethersworn Canonist

The mana myrs will take the place of some mana rocks that are traditional in Commander, while cards like Solemn Simulacrum are a great fit in most decks thanks to its inheret value. Etched Champion will likely be the most annoying creature on the board, while Hangarback Walker has the ability to churn out a bunch of 1/1 or 4/1 flying Thopters!

How very exciting!

By the way, some Vehicles are also a great addition because they can help you to evade sorcery-speed removal and board sweepers. Even if you don't have creatures on the board, you can always summon Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer and crew your vehicles to keep up the pressure!

Naturally, you can add some more vehicles from Aether Revolt if there are more worthy choices! By the way, Scrap Trawler is also very good at maintaining some form of card advantage.

Smuggler's Copter Cultivator's Caravan

Fleetwheel Cruiser Bomat Bazaar Barge Skysovereign, Consul Flagship

Building Blocks #2: Artifact-Friendly Creatures

Aside from artifact creatures, there are also some creatures that play well alongside them. Here are some examples.

Akiri, Line-Slinger Puresteel Paladin Indomitable Archangel Stoneforge Mystic Stonehewer Giant Veteran Motorist

Because of the fact that we're playing with more creatures than usual, that makes playing with Equipment very sensible. You should always have a few bodies to carry an assortment of swords, which brings us to our next section!

Building Blocks #3: Equipment

Because you are running a lot of big-costed creatures, this is also a drawback. You might often be stuck with cards that you cannot cast, simply because they are too expensive. However, there are many ways to cheat them onto the battlefield, and here are some of the best cost-saving methods!

Sword of Body and Mind Sword of War and Peace Sword of Feast and Famine Sword of Light and Shadow Sword of Fire and Ice Skullclamp Lightning Greaves Swiftfoot Boots Sunforger

And of course, in addition to Stoneforge Mystic, we also have some nice cards to help us find the equipment we want!

Steelshaper's Gift Open the Armory Nahiri, the Lithomancer

Building Blocks #4: Support Spells

If we're going to be attacking our opponents, we want to have at least three artifacts on the battlefield as well as Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer on the battlefield. But what if some nasty creatures are in the way or if there are some annoyances on the board?

I guess we'll just have to clear the path and punch through!

Dispatch Swords to Plowshares Return to Dust Wear // Tear Path to Exile Aurelia's Fury Consulate Crackdown Vandalblast Oblivion Stone

Building Blocks #5: The Usual Touches

And of course, to keep up the artifact count, we're rounding off the deck with some Commander staples to keep the deck efficient and running well. The faster you get to churn out some threats and achieve Metalcraft, the more lethal Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer will be!

Boros Signet Sol Ring Coalition Relic Gilded Lotus Mox Opal Mana Crypt

The Final Product!

So, how are you liking Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer so far? Personally, I'm happy to find a deck that can support Vehicles from the Kaladesh block and this deck can also benefit greatly from all the cool cards coming out of Aether Revolt. Let's look forward to more previews and update this deck accordingly! If you're interested in pimping out the deck, there are also a bunch of Zendikar Expeditions and Kaladesh Masterpieces to spruce up your beloved deck!

In the meantime, enjoy beating down with 4/1 Myrs!
