Rhystic Study: Glissa, the Traitor

Glissa, the Traitor

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 29th column of "Rhystic Study"!

Commander is a world filled with artifacts and decks that take advantage of artifacts are usually blue. This is natural, because blue is usually the artificer's color by default. However, Glissa, the Traitor is a unique card in a sense that it encourages you to build it with a lot of artifacts.

Glissa is also an excellent Commander because of her in-built card advantage capabilities. Whenever you kill and opponent's creature, you get to pick up an artifact from your graveyard. This means that it is in your interest to play with a lot of artifacts, find ways to put artifacts in your graveyard and find ways to kill your opponent's creatures!

Let's explore the heinous world of Glissa, the Traitor.

Building Blocks #1: Utility Artifacts That Go To The Graveyard

Preferably, you want to play with artifacts that go to the graveyard, such that you can recur it with Glissa, the Traitor. Artifacts that stay on the board are fine, but if you have a lot of cards that can be sacrificed away, you will find it more synergistic.

A few cards stand out, especially those that take down another card while being sacrificed. Here are some of the top choices!

Building Blocks #2: Graveyard Fillers & Tutors

It's no fun if an opponent's creature die when Glissa, the Traitor is in play, but you have no arifacts to recur. For this reason, you need to find some ways to put cards into your graveyard. Some of these cards like Entomb and Jarad's Orders also double up as tutors, in addition to your regular tutors you normally play in Commander.

Entomb Jarad's Orders Buried AliveDemonic Tutor Vampiric Tutor Grim Tutor Grisly Salvage Grapple with the Past

Building Blocks #3: Artifact Creatures / Threats

For Jarad's Orders and Buried Alive, you really want to search for Genesis, because it will give you a source of recurring card advantage. And because you want to put artifacts in your graveyard, you should try to include more artifact creatures as well!

Solemn Simulacrum Steel Hellkite Wurmcoil Engine Duplicant Metalwork Colossus Noxious Gearhulk Verdurous Gearhulk Scarecrone Burnished Hart

Building Blocks #4: Removal

Because Glissa's ability only works when an opponent's creature dies, you want to have some removal. Spot removal is already great, but can you imagine mass removal or repeated removal? That's a steady stream of cards while your opponent loses their board.

Go for the Throat Abrupt DecayPutrefy Decree of Pain Damnation Black Sun's Zenith In Garruk's Wake Thornbite Staff Viridian Longbow

The last two equipment are particularly interesting because Glissa, the Traitor has deathtouch. If you manage to stick either of these equipment on her, she will be able to pick of any creature on the board and slowly whittle away at your opponent's board.

Building Blocks #5: The Usual Golgari Goodies and Format Superstars

Lastly, we're going to throw in the usual format superstars to support Glissa's theme and round out our exciting Golgari deck!

The Final Product!

Glissa, the Traitor is one of the most unique Commanders that Black and Green can have and one of the most recursive ones. There is a lot of card advantage everywhere and it rewards you for playing the long game. Your opponent's better be packing artifact or graveyard hate, otherwise they're in for a nasty surprise!
