Rhystic Study: Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice

Greetings, chosen one... Welcome to the 26th column of "Rhystic Study"!

Commander 2016 has been on the shelves for a couple of weeks now and I'd like to build another four-color Commander. Atraxa, Praetors' Voice is an excellent card to begin with, because proliferate is so much fun if you can get things right!

Building Blocks #1: Other Proliferate Cards

Atraxa, Praetors' Voice enables us to proliferate at the end of our turns, but what are some ways to increase the deck's consistency? Sometimes, your Commander might not be in play, and other times, you want to overload your opponents by proliferating multiple times. On other occasions, you also want to proliferate for lethal damage or even to activate the ultimate ability on your Planeswalker!

For these purposes, there is no hard in playing a few of these cards to help us out!

Contagion Clasp Contagion Engine Thrummingbird Inexorable Tide Tezzeret's Gambit Steady Progress

Building Blocks #2: Counter-Doubling Tricks

Since we're going to be building around a lot of counter-based effects, it makes a lot of sense to have other tools to assist us in doubling them. For example, Hardened Scales is very  cheap and cost-effective. With every proliferate trigger, you're getting double value and it only costs 1 mana! What other cards are great for related purposes?

Deepglow Skate Doubling Season Gilder Bairn Corpsejack Menace Primal Vigor Vorel of the Hull Clade

Building Blocks #3: Creatures that Benefit from Counters!

There are tons of creatures that we can play in a four-color deck but we don't want to just jam in any creature. We want them to have counters on it, or have abilities to generate counters, or to have a way to benefit from counters. Here are just some examples:

Gyre Sage Fathom Mage Ghave, Guru of Spores Forgotten Ancient Reyhan, Last of the Abzan Scavenging Ooze Kalonian Hydra Juniper Order Ranger

For example, Gyre Sage can quickly grow into a mana-machine that enables you to cast your bigger spells. Fathom Mage absolutely loves counters because you'll be drawing cards every single time you put counters on her. Similarly, you will be able to churn out and endless supply of Saprolings with the help of Ghave, Guru of Spores. And if for some reason any of your creatures doesn't already have counters on it, Forgotten Ancient and Juniper Order Ranger will be glad to hand some around!

There is also another way to play the game. Rather than spread out all your counters, you might also want to stack all of them onto Kalonian Hydra! It depends on what is happening in your game!

Building Blocks #4: Mana Sources

Since we have a four-mana deck, we really want to be careful with our mana sources. Everflowing Chalice can quickly become a huge mana rock, but the only drawback is that it produces colorless mana. However, I'm happy to include it as well as some of these these, because they interact with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice so well!

Astral Cornucopia Coalition Relic Crystalline Crawler

In general, since we have green, we also want some Rampant Growth effects and the rule of thumb is to have them not cost more than four mana. In addition, if they are going to cost three or four mana, they had better be getting us some form of card advantage, for example, if they are grabbing us two lands at the very least.

Cultivate Kodama's Reach Farseek Ranger's Path Skyshroud Claim

Please note that since we will be using a fetchland / dual land mana base, your Farseek, Ranger's Path and Skyshroud Claim can all grab dual lands! You can even grab Murmuring Bosk! Nifty!

Building Blocks #5: Some Planeswalkers

While this isn't a dedicated Planeswalker deck, I want a handful of them to provide a different angle of attack. Ideally, you want those that have impactful ultimate abilities and also planeswalkers that can "ultimate" immediately when you have Doubling Season in play. Otherwise, their emblem had better be very powerful such that it warrants you protecting them against multiple opponents. They should also either draw you more cards or provide you some form of board control!

Tamiyo, Field Researcher Narset Transcendent Tamiyo, the Moon Sage Ugin, the Spirit Dragon Elspeth, Sun's Champion Venser, the Sojourner Dovin Baan Nissa, Vital Force

Building Blocks #6: Other Cards with Synergy

Well, we knew that this was more of a fun deck more than it was going to be a competitive one. The thrill of putting a hundred or two hundred counters of the board is real!

Spike Weaver Cathars' Crusade Lux Cannon Master Biomancer Inspiring Call Clearwater Goblet

You'll be able to control combat with Spike Weaver and opponent's wont be able to attack you until they deal with it first. Lux Cannon is a funny, reusable source of removal and Inspiring Call is important in protecting your board of creatures! Lastly, Clearwater Goblet gets really annoying when you pile a bunch of charge counters on it! Use your imagination and have the most fun you can!

The Final Product!

Four-color decks can be a little of a mish-mash everywhere but the focus is to stick to the theme and make sure that all your cards interact well with your Commander. Stay focused, stay on track and keep proliferating! And remember to bring a whole lot of dice when you sit down with this deck.

You'll need them.
