A Guide to Bant Company

Grand Prix Kyoto and Sydney did not pan well for our team. Although we failed to make day 2, I would like to talk about the modern deck I played that went 6-2 in Grand Prix Kyoto, 7-1 in Grand Prix Kyoto side event and 6-1-1 in Grand Prix Sydney.

This is the deck list I played for both events.

Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Jace, the Mind Sculptor

While Jace, the Mind Sculptor is a very good card, I shaved it all the way down to 1 copy. In the current meta where people are trying to win on turn 4 or don’t interact with you, tapping out on turn 4 can be a death knell. Jace, the Mind Sculptor shines when people are playing midrange deck or control decks, so I still kept a slot for him.

As the meta has stabilised, the top tier decks are Hollow One, Humans, Tron, Bogles and Affinity, none of which you want to play Jace, the Mind Sculptor against.

I still have 1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor in my bant company as it act as your fifth "Collected Company" where it generate you advantage and card selection. Its Unsummon ability is very good against stuff like delve creaturse and even Arcbound Ravager or Steel Overseer.

Meddling Mage

Meddling Mage

Meddling Mage gives you a way to mess with decks that do not want to interact with you. After removing Retreat to Coralhelm, I wanted more interaction against combo decks and Meddling Mage provide a good solution against them.

Worship

Worship

Creatures decks are pretty soft to Worship now, which has won me a lot of games as enchanment hate typically does not come in against us in postboard games. It is the type of card that can completely warp a game.

Field of Ruin

Field of Ruin

The 1 of Field of Ruin is my way of respecting Tron. Normally I feel that 2 pieces of land destruction is enough to buy you enough time to win the game against tron. Combined with Eternal Witness, Tron player will have a hard time assembling their mana against us. I feel the matchup is slightly favoured for us after adding the additional land destruction.

Dominaria cards for Bant Company

A Dominaria Addition

Shalai, Voice of Plenty

One card that caught my eye was Shalai, Voice of Plenty. The deck had a bad mono red matchup and the card helps greatly while also being useful against Storm and Ad Nauseum. Having 4 toughness is very important as they have to spend two burn spells to kill it. With so many mana dorks, shalai also provide a mana sink in the late game and is decently sized in most matchups.

Sideboarding Guide

5C Humans

Thalia's Lieutenant Mantis Rider

This matchup is favourable for us. In Game 1, we only lose if they tempo us with early pressure. As we can easily store the board, I normally save my Path to Exile for big creature like champion of parish or flying creature like Mantis Rider. After sideboard, we have access to Reflector Mage to buy us enough time to win the long game. Worship is also a game winner against them.

Out
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-4 Spell Queller
-2 Scavenging Ooze

In
+1 Reflector Mage
+2 Blessed Alliance
+2 Worship
+1 Vendilion Clique
+1 Voice of Resurgence

Hollow One

Burning Inquiry Goblin Lore

I have played this matchup a lot and the matchup is definitely favourable. Path to Exile, Reflector Mage, and Voice of Resurgence buy you enough time to win with your Knight of the Reliquary, Spell Queller being a 2/3 flyer does a good job at blocking Bloodghast and Flamewake Phoenix

Out
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-1 Ghost Quarter
-2 Tireless Tracker
-1 Spell Queller

In
+1 Reflector Mage
+1 Bojuka Bog
+2 Worship
+1 Voice of Resurgence

Tron

This matchup depend mostly whether you can get an active Knight of the Reliquary before they get their tron pieces. Knight of the Reliquary allow you to tutor for Ghost Quarter and Field of Ruin to slow them down before you finish them off with a large knight. Eternal Witness can also help you regrowth your land to continue stripping them off tron. After sideboard, the matchup become match easier with Stony Silence and counters to stop their haymakers.

Out
-2 Scavenging Ooze
-4 Path to Exile
-2 Reflector Mage

In
+3 Unified Will
+2 Stony Silence
+2 Negate
+2 Worship
+1 Vendilion Clique

Affinity

This matchup is also favorable for you unless they land an early Steel Overseer or Cranial Plating which you have no answer to. Spell Quellers line up greatly against Vault Skirge, Signal Pest and Inkmoth Nexus.

Worship Stony Silence

Post-board, you have Worship and Stony Silence which is basically a free win and also Blessed Alliance to answer Etched Champion.

Out
-2 Scavenging Ooze
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-1 Collected Company
-2 Tireless Tracker
-1 Voice of Resurgence

In
+1 Reflector Mage
+2 Blessed Alliance
+2 Stony Silence
+2 Worship

Burn

Goblin GuideLava Spike

This is one of the matchups I do not want to face. We normally take some damage from our mana base and don’t pressure burn player fast enough to close out the game before they can burn us out. Try to get knight of reliquary to 4/4 before casting to prevent it dying to a single burn spell. Spell Queller is pretty good against them also as they have to spend a burn spell on it if they want to get back the spell exile by it. Meddling Mage is also good at tanking a burn spell if you are able to name it correctly.

-2 Reflector Mage
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-2 Eternal Witness
-2 Tireless Tracker

+2 Worship
+2 Blessed Alliance
+2 Negate
+1 Voice of Resurgence

Bogles

Slippery BogleDaybreak Coronet

This matchup depend whether you can get your Knight of the Reliquary big enough to match their boggle. Spell Queller help you counter their key spell like Rancor, Daybreak Coronet and Spirit Mantle. After sideboard the game become much easier with Negate, Worship and Blessed Alliance.

-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-2 Path to Exile
-2 Scavenging Ooze
-2 Voice of Resurgence

+1 Vendilion Clique
+2 Negate
+2 Worship
+2 Blessed Alliance

UR Storm

GrapeshotPast in Flames

Sometime Meddling Mage is just a free win against the deck naming Grapeshot and protecting it with Spell Queller. Scavening ooze is also very good against storm especially we have so much mana from our mana dork. After sideboard, Knight of the Reliquary act as a tutor for Bojuka Bog to stop their Past in Flames.

-1 Ghost Quarter
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor
-2 Path to Exile
-3 Voice of Resurgence

+2 Negate
+3 Unified Will
+1 Bojuka Bog
+1 Vendilion Clique

Jund

Dark ConfidantBloodbraid Elf

The deck has a good midrange matchup because of the value creatures like Voice of Resurgence, Tireless Tracker and Eternal Witness. Collected Company is also a two for one which is problematic for Jund player. The only way for jund to win is by Dark Confidant so normally I will just use my Path to Exile on turn 2 if they have it even though they get to ramp to Bloodbraid Elf next turn.

-2 Birds of Paradise
+1 Voice of Resurgence
+1 Reflector Mage

Ironworks combo

Krark-Clan IronworksMox Opal

Our deck lines up well against Ironworks because we have Spell Queller and they can’t really kill it game 1. As you would expect, Krark-Clan Ironworks is their key card so I will just save my Meddling Mage and Spell Queller for it. After sideboard game become very favourable cause of Stony Silence, counterspell and even graveyard hate.

-1 Ghost Quarter
-2 Reflector Mage
-3 Voice of Resurgence
-2 Path to Exile
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

+1 Vendilion Clique
+2 Stony Silence
+3 Unified Will
+2 Negate
+1 Bojuka Bog

Thats mark the end of my article! I will be focusing on Dominaria limited and standard for now as it will be the format for Grand Prix Beijing and Pro tour Dominaria. If you have any questions regarding the deck or sideboard, I will be happy to answer them in the comments section or via Twitter. Thanks!
